For the period of June 2016 to late 2018, our 777 underwent major overhaul in Pearl Harbor. Between January 2019 and February 2020, she conducted training and testing operations in the local area with qualification and certification testing where required. In March 2020, the North Carolina got underway for a regularly scheduled deployment.

Cmdr. Gary Montalvo greets Coach Roy Williams and the UNC basketball team as they tour the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor. The UNC basketball team is in Hawaii for the Maui Jim Maui Invitational this weekend. They will play the University of Hawaii tonight (1 a.m. ET).

Commander Gary Montalvo, USS North Carolina (SSN 777), Receives Prestigious 2016 Stockdale Award:
On November 8 in a ceremony at the Pentagon, CDR Gary Montalvo, of Durham, NC, received the prestigious 2016 Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale Leadership Award. The award is presented annually to two commissioned officers on active duty who serve as examples of excellence in leadership and conspicuous contribution to the improvement of leadership in the Navy.
