Welcome to the home of the SSN 777 Club
For many North Carolina residents, it may come as a pleasant surprise to learn that there is an active-duty USS North Carolina that has been patrolling international waters since it was commissioned in 2008. The current USS North Carolina (SSN 777), dubbed by the crew as the Tarheel Boat, is a Virginia-class fast-attack submarine. Commissioned on May 3, 2008, in Wilmington, its home-port is Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
The SSN 777 Club formed in August 2016 for three purposes:
to support the crew and families of the USS North Carolina during its active service;
to promote awareness of the 777 across our state as many connect USS North Carolina solely with the proud Battleship North Carolina, BB-55, moored in Wilmington, N.C.;
to create a memorial/museum of the 777, as feasible, after it fulfills its service to our nation so that it may be preserved for educational purposes. Our ambition is that both North Carolinas may be present in Wilmington in gratitude for and as evidence of our State's distinguished naval heritage.
